SO YOU WANT TO BECOME A BREEDER

(Things You Should Know)

1.             You have a pedigree female cat.  In order to commence as a registered breeder you must have the following:
                *              pedigree papers of your female (as issued by its Breeder)
                *              the registration certificate (as issued by CANT (Inc.))
                *              become a member of the CANT (Inc.).

2.             You must now apply for a prefix.  [the dos and don'ts in choosing names are set out in the application form which is available from the Secretary CANT (Inc.)]
                Plan ahead and allow plenty of time for this process to be undertaken.  (The CANT (Inc.) has to confer with other bodies throughout Australia to ensure that your prefix, once issued, will be unique to you.)
                Once the prefix is issued you are ready to start a breeding program.

3.             Now you need to decide on a Stud for your female.  If you are not sure, seek advice from Judges or experienced breeders, to determine what stud would be suitable.

4.             Once deciding on a Stud, you will need to confirm with the owner of the stud the following aspects:
                *       what fee is to be charged; (this can vary from a flat $ amount to a request for the pick of the litter)
                *       other factors to be settled include:
                         #    what conditions (if any) apply to its use;
                               (eg. some breeders restrict the use of progeny e.g. all males kits must be desexed)
                         #    whether reciprocal mating is offered; (ie. a female of the Stud owner can be mated with your stud.)
                         #    whether a return mating is available should the female not conceive the first time;
                 #    whether there is a boarding charge for the female during her stay; (sometimes when a cat travels any distance she may go "off call" and then would need to stay in the stud owners care until she comes into
season again. The stay may even cover ensuring conception before being returned to you.)
                         #    whether other transport costs apply;
#    whether any special immunisation requirements apply; (eg. some breeders insist visiting cats are vaccinated for Feline Leukaemia)

Whatever is to be applied, needs to be agreed by both parties before the mating takes place.  It is also best to get it in writing.

5.             The owner of the Stud in agreeing to the mating then has an obligation to:
                *              keep secure, feed and care for the dam (medical bills excepted);
                *              witness at least 3 matings to the chosen stud;
                *              provide written certification of the dates these matings took place; and
                *              provided a copy of the stud's pedigree and registration details to the owner of the Dam.

6.             The owner of the dam has an obligation to:
                *              provide a healthy cat free of parasites and infections;
                *              pay all fees as they become due;
                *              lodge to the CANT (Inc.) within 56 days of the birth of the kittens, the properly completed litter registration form, including service certification and fees.

NOTE:

The service certification which in the case of CANT (Inc.) is included in the litter registration form, is a requirement of the CANT (Inc.) and provides the Registrar with evidence as to the parentage of the kittens to be registered (these forms are available from the Secretary or Registrar.)

CANT (Inc.) have no interest in private agreements made between the owners/lessees of the stud or dam, and any documentation requirements of the CANT (Inc.) should not be made part of any agreement between the parties.
